KüNO Summer school on Marine benthic habitats

14 – 25 September 2014 in Lauenburg (Elbe) North Germany

Marine benthic habitats – function of sediments and valuation of their services

This annual KüNO summer school is organized by the Alfred-Wegener Institute (AWI), the Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht (HZG) and the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Research Warnemünde (IOW).

“KüNO” is an acronym for “Küstenforschung Nordsee / Ostsee” (“Coastal Research Agenda for the North Sea and Baltic Sea”) which is a network of five collaborating BMBF funded projects dealing with several aspects of benthic sediments, habitats and coastal areas in German regions of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. These projects are BACOSA, MOSSCO, NOAH, SECOS and STopP.

Therefore this year the summer school will focus on marine benthic habitats. Subjects are geology and sediments of North Sea and Baltic Sea, mapping benthic habitats, energy and particle fluxes concerning benthic systems, conflicts of anthropogenic usage of the coastal and marine systems, as well as assessment and management of benthic habitats.
